Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Contributed with thanks to PCYC Queensland’s First Nations State Partnerships Manager Michael Cedar 1-4 - Spirits were high as Mackay’s young dancing stars took to the stage. Photos supplied.

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Xavier Rudd, Mental as Anything, The Whitlams and more on first lineup announcement for November 2026 The call is out for fans of Xavier Rudd to ‘Follow the Sun’ to the 2026 Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 6-8. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. Having visited Airlie Beach briefly on previous Australian tours, Rudd is already familiar with the region’s scenic beauty, but this will be his first time playing its signature event, dubbed a ‘party in paradise’ and the ‘ultimate music holiday’. “From the photos I’ve seen, the festival setting is amazing,” he said. “My music is definitely a celebration of our natural world, so a place like Airlie feels especially aligned with songs like ‘Follow the Sun’. “These are the kinds of shows I love, and hopefully, weather permitting, we can actually pull down the tent and play under the stars!” Equally as famous for his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism as he is for his extraordinary gifts as a musician, the significance of playing at a destination known as the ‘Heart of the Great Barrier Reef’ isn’t lost on Rudd. “I’ve been lucky to witness some of the good work that people are doing in the world of reef regeneration and that’s inspiring,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue down that path.” Also urging festivalgoers to ‘Live it Up’ in Airlie Beach is beloved Australian band Mental As Anything, whose performance will form part of a historic 50th anniversary tour, comprising a limited number of exclusive festival appearances and select metropolitan headline shows. Original member and iconic pop artist, Reg Mombassa, is promising fans a rare and unforgettable opportunity to experience the band’s timeless hits live once more, and celebrate their unique blend of songwriting, artistry, and performance flair. “We’re known for being a party band, so the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is a perfect fit,” he said. In total agreeance that there’s ‘No Aphrodisiac’ quite like it are The Whitlams, whose frontman Tim Freedman says the band is thrilled to be one of the festival’s headliners for 2026. “I’ve been wanting to return to the Whitsundays for decades and now we have the chance,” he said, adding: “it’s a great line-up, music lifts the soul, and we rock!” Other additions to the first line-up release include The Radiators, Adam Harvey, 19-Twenty, Skinny Living (UK), Little Quirks, The Mason Rack Band, The Wayward Suns, Loonaloop, Salt & Steel and the Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s 2025 Passport to Airlie competition winners Monroe. Tickets are on sale now at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au costing $325 for a three-day pass, or $1100 for a VIP package, both including entry to the opening and after parties that bookend the main event. From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. Flametree, A Festival Fundraiser

August 24, 2023

Bringing music lovers together to celebrate the reef and raise money for its protection, are at the foundations of the inaugural Flametree Gathering, brought to you by respected local musician David Flower and his partner Bronwyn Garland.

A grassroots gathering, with all proceeds going towards Eco Barge Clean Seas, the event promises to be both inspiring and empowering, a mix of music, art, soul practice, food stalls, games and fun.

A total of nine acts will perform on the day, with both local and state-wide talent handpicked and invited to bring a special flair to the event.

Featuring world class musicians from Julian James to Trilliah, Bobby Longstaff, to The Barlyshakes, the music ranges from Blues to rock folk and reggae so there’s a little bit of something for everyone.

David and Bronwyn felt inspired to raise money for Eco Barge Clean Seas and the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre when they volunteered on one of their regular beach clean missions and experienced firsthand the great work they do.

“It was incredible how much stuff we picked up from the beach - I think 250kg was collected by 10 volunteers in two hours!” he explained.

“The whole thing is run by volunteers, and it is so important we keep the boat running.”

Libby Edge, Founder of Eco Barge, said she is extremely grateful to hear proceeds will come to her charity organisation, and is looking forward to coming to the event and celebrating what they do with the rest of the volunteers.

“By the end of the year we will have collected 250,000 kilos of marine debris!” said Libby.

“It’s been a long journey and it’s wonderful that David has nominated us – we’re really chuffed and honoured.

“It will also be a great opportunity for many of the volunteers to come together and celebrate.”

During the event Libby will host a stall where attendees can stop for a chat, find out more about Eco Barge and volunteer their time for one of the beach clean missions.

“We have over 2,500 volunteers, but there is always room for more!” she said.

David said he has always loved the name ‘Flametree’ and has wanted to hold an event in the area for many years.

When his friend offered him the use of some private land, he knew his dream was coming true and by creating a fundraiser festival he has deepened the meaningful intention of the event.

“It’s a family friendly event and kids under 12 go free!” said David.

“There will be games, activities and of course back-to-back live music,”

Well-known regional artist La Lune Croker will be creating some art for the event and there will also be soul practice sessions by event co-organiser Bronwyn Garland of Garland of Hope.

A burger bar run by Eco Barge and their volunteers will keep the crowds well-fed and a charity raffle will include prizes from Cruise Whitsundays, Goodness Gracious and tickets to Airlie Beach Festival of Music.

Kicking off at 10am, live music at the inaugural Flametree Gathering will begin at 12pm and continue until the event close at 10pm.

Please note, this is a BYO event and organisers are promoting responsible drinking.

Going, Going, Gone

August 24, 2023
By Rose-Marie Dusting

These three words explain a lot about our extinct and endangered species.

I can’t stand by and see this continuing to happen, so I came up with the ‘Love an endangered Aussie species’ revolution.

I want all Australians to get on board and say, ‘I stand up for our endangered wildlife’.

Australia is home to some of the world’s most unique and rare species.

However, since European settlements in 1788, the country has experienced widespread habitat destruction and the introduction of non-native predators such as cats and foxes, causing more than 100 endemic species to go extinct over the past 200 years.

According to a recent study, Australia’s wildlife has also experienced unprecedented losses with 202 new animal and plant species making the list of threatened species between 2016 and 2022.

Many more animals are currently threatened or at risk of extinction as urban development, bushfires and flood events persist.

Here are just a few: bilby, koala, platypus, long-footed potoroo, greater glider, numbat, orange-bellied parrot, regent honeyeater.

Our children and their children deserve a thriving planet.

It’s not too late to make changes for a better environment for them.

I am just one person.

I need all Aussies to say, ‘I stand up for our unique wildlife.

‘I am for environment, education and action.’

The thing our children are worried about most is the environment.

So, what are we going to do to put their minds at ease?

Love and protect our precious, unique wildlife.

My much-loved character Paddles the Playful Platypus is now an endangered species. 4.5 species have become extinct every century.

It’s time for action now!

My quote of the week: I can’t be everything to everyone; I am not chocolate.

About Rose-Marie: Rose-Marie is an author, journalist, mum and nanny. She is married to Anthony and has two children, Chloe and Samuel, and grandsons Levi, Gatlin and Henry, with a new grandchild due next March.

Kucom’s Latest Cast Share Their Thoughts

August 24, 2023

On Contemporary Australian Play

Kucom Theatre’s latest production, ‘Things I Know To Be True’, is a modern Australian drama written by Andrew Bovell, a well-known Australian playwright known for co-writing the screenplay for Strictly Ballroom with Baz Luhrmann.

The story centres around what seems like a typical suburban family: Fran, Bob and their four adult children. In spite of the love they all have for each other, little by little as the seasons turn, the veneer peels away. Perfect becomes imperfect as the dramas of the children wreak havoc on the family.

Read on to find out more about the cast and crew behind Kucom Theatre’s production of ‘Things I Know To Be True’.

Victor Scott – Director

“I have a passion for Australian dramatic works, and Andrew Bovell is the best there is in my opinion. Bovell’s writing feels so natural and real.”

Sarah Neivandt – Fran Price

“I auditioned because I love Bovell’s work … His plots are complex, but his characters are so relatable. This play is particularly appealing as it is set in contemporary Australia and shows the strength of family love despite the personal issues of individual family members.”

Simon Robinson – Bob Price

“Having previously been fortunate enough to be cast in an amazing play by this author, with an awesome cast and twists and turns everywhere, I knew I had to audition for a part and I haven’t been disappointed. I see real life dramas and people, and I can identify with a number of the characters, their reactions and interactions.”

Michael Brennan – Mark / Mia Price

“I auditioned for the role of Mark/Mia because I want to explore a variety of genres. I like the role because it has some intersectionality with my own life experiences, and I am curious to see in which ways I am able to channel an authenticity into the character.”

Nicole Pasquale – Pip Price

“I enjoy plays written by Australian playwrights because I find they connect with our culture. In my role as Pip I get to play a selfish nasty version of myself. I think it will be fun.”

Gordon Lowe – Ben Price

“This play is very different from any other show I have done. It’s very serious, and real, and impactful … My role is great because Ben is very relatable to many people in where he fits in the family dynamic, as well as exploring what happens when a series of bad decisions snowballs into a crisis.”

Shae Robinson – Rosie Price

“The display of family, love, hurt and pain throughout the play allows a pure relation between audience and characters. I can really see parts of myself in the role. I love the depth and inner thinking that my character has and I can’t wait to explore them.”

Sister Cities Unite

August 24, 2023

Mackay extended a warm welcome to a group of 15 students and two chaperones hailing from its sister city, Matsuura in Japan. The students embarked on an engaging cultural exchange program, immersing themselves in the vibrant spirit of the sugar city for a week-long visit.

During their stay, these young visitors had the opportunity to delve into the heart of the region, soaking in its diverse offerings and forging connections with local families who kindly hosted them.

A highlight of their journey was the official welcome extended by the Mackay Regional Council, which took place last week. The students were warmly greeted by the council's staff, as well as Mayor Greg Williamson and CEO Scott Owen.

Throughout their stay, the students explored various facets of the region, including iconic landmarks like 'Buffy' the giant cane toad in Sarina, the Sarina Sugar Shed, and the Sarina Youth Centre. The journey also encompassed visits to the Mackay Art Society Inc and Holy Spirit College Mackay, providing the students with a glimpse into the local art and educational landscape.

As the students bid farewell to their Mackay hosts, expressions of gratitude, or "Arigatou," reverberated through the air. The cultural exchange program served as a bridge between two communities, fostering understanding, appreciation, and lifelong memories.

Shaping Culture And Creativity

August 24, 2023

Join The Conversation For The Future Of Arts In Our Region

For those whose inclinations gravitate toward the cultural tapestry, the harmonies of music, the strokes of artistic ingenuity, the narratives of the theatrical realm, or the boundless expanse of creativity in all its forms, a remarkable avenue presents itself to exert influence over the shaping of our locale.

In other words, speak now or forever hold your brushstroke!

Mackay Regional Council is currently undertaking community consultation to create a new Mackay Region Arts and Culture Plan.

Mayor Greg Williamson said council was passionate about enhancing our region’s liveability.

“Arts and culture are intrinsically linked to the liveability of our region,” Mr Williamson said.

“The arts entertain us; they make our lives more vibrant, interesting and exciting; they challenge us, make us think and often evoke an emotional response.

“A region without culture or the arts would be a very dull place.

“Luckily, our region already has a vibrant arts and culture scene – we have amazing festivals, a diverse art collection, a state-of-the-art theatre showing a range of local and travelling productions and we have an arts development program that is always working to foster up-and-coming creatives.

“What this Arts and Culture Plan will do is allow us to fine tune our efforts.

“We want to identify any gaps in the region, be they geographical or types of art and culture that residents feel we don’t support sufficiently. We would also like to hear where we are doing well – so we can keep doing it.

“If you feel that your part of the region misses out, now is the time to let us know; if you feel there are better ways we could be fostering grass-roots creative projects, we want to hear them, and if you want to see more of a particular type of art, now’s the time to make your voice heard.”

Having your input on the direction of arts and culture in our region is easy – simply head to connectingmackay.com.au. Once there, you can complete a short online survey or register to join a face-to-face focus group session. The survey closes on Sunday, September 17 at 11.59pm.

Face-to-face sessions will be held on:

● September 4, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at Jubilee Community Centre, Alfred Street

● September 5, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at Badila Art and Craft Gallery, Elsie Nash St, Pinnacle

● September 6, from 9.30am to 11.30am at Jubilee Community Centre, Alfred Street

● September 7, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at Council Client Service Centre, Broad Street, Sarina

If you want to see more of a particular type of art, like paste-ups and street

art (pictured with artist Muddy Grimes and assistant), now is the time to make your voice heard

Bacon Busters: Hitz, Huntz And Hogs This Weekend!

August 24, 2023

The Collinsville community are roaring and ready to go for their ninth annual Bacon Busters event which is due to take place this weekend and is anticipated to be the biggest and best yet.

For almost a decade, Collinsville’s vibrant country culture has been displayed at it’s best through this event which brings the community together to raise funds for the local state school.

Attendees can sit back and watch a variety of events or, for those spirited and experienced in the art of pig-hunting, can participate in the Bacon Buster biggest boar competition.

Registered as pests, the wild boar in the area is free game to hunting enthusiasts and the skill of killing the beasts has become a popular sport in the area.

While some may view this as a bit barbaric, this is a staunch and accepted part of local culture.

The event, however, is more than a hunting competition, at its heart it is a fun family day out that brings everyone together.

There will be a variety of additional activities including dog-jumping, ute pulling and iron-man competitions.

Kids will also enjoy many free events and there will be plenty of entertainment, food, and merriment.

The much-anticipated Bacon Busters weigh-in, however, is a highlight of the event.

Over the past six years the local P&C organised event has raised over $100,000 for the school and proceeds are put towards funding school excursions or extra equipment.

Each year, the P&C choose a local charity to also benefit from the event and this year RACQ CQ Rescue has been selected.
