Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

Not a Dry Eye at Awakening Spirits Sell-Out Show

The PCYC’s Awakening Spirits 2026 moved audiences on Wednesday 11 March with touching stories told through dance. An audience of more than 1000 was drawn to watch 200 performers in a sold-out session at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. Awakening Spirits is an annual performance that brings together young people from 13 schools across Mackay, who take part in PCYC's Cultural Arts in Dance program. Since beginning in 2022, the audience has rocketed from just 175 people to a sold-out audience at the convention centre this year. The piece performed was ‘The Waterhole’, a concept and story developed by PCYC Queensland’s First Nations Coordinator and the man behind Cultural Arts In Dance, Patrick Thaiday. It is inspired by the magical stories of The Myths and Legends of the Torres Strait, a book written by the late Margaret Lawrie. The story begins with Tilly, a white sulphur-crested cockatoo, who watches as a plume of smoke rises from the canopy of the Australian outback bush lands. Indigenous warriors and hunters from communities conduct a cultural burn – a land management practice refined over thousands of years. From her vantage point, Tilly observes the hunters moving alongside the fire’s perimeter, tracking animals displaced by its flames. As the story goes on, the waterhole, long a point of convergence for countless species, begins to change. Tilly notices a dark, viscous substance appearing beneath the surface. Drawn by concern she descends to investigate. As her feet touch the water, the substance adheres to her feathers releasing harsh toxic fumes that engulf her feet. She takes flight only to be flipped over by the weight of her wings. Her bright plumage darkens rapidly, and her beak blackens under the spreading poison. When Tilly rises again, she is no longer the white cockatoo she once was. Transformed by the dark waters, she takes form of a willy wagtail – a creature associated with omens, messages, and transitions. This metamorphosis positions her within a larger conflict, linking her fate to forces that extend far beyond the waterholes edge. Now known as Willy the Wagtail, she becomes a bearer of warnings and stories, navigating a world where ancient myth and emerging threats collide. When the story of ‘The Waterhole’ ends, all performers returned to perform a choreographed dance to The Seekers song, I am Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" The bright smiles, excitement, and emotion from the performers did not leave many dry eyes in the auditorium; the room filling with a feeling: this is what we want our Australia to be. Contributed with thanks to PCYC Queensland’s First Nations State Partnerships Manager Michael Cedar 1-4 - Spirits were high as Mackay’s young dancing stars took to the stage. Photos supplied.

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

‘Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music

Follow the Sun’ to the Airlie Beach Festival of Music Xavier Rudd, Mental as Anything, The Whitlams and more on first lineup announcement for November 2026 The call is out for fans of Xavier Rudd to ‘Follow the Sun’ to the 2026 Airlie Beach Festival of Music from November 6-8. Set to arrive straight from a European festival tour, the popular Australian singer-songwriter says in addition to his much-loved catalogue of hits, a few surprises are in store for the Whitsunday audience, hinting: “There will be some new music at this show, which will be played for the first time in Australia”. Having visited Airlie Beach briefly on previous Australian tours, Rudd is already familiar with the region’s scenic beauty, but this will be his first time playing its signature event, dubbed a ‘party in paradise’ and the ‘ultimate music holiday’. “From the photos I’ve seen, the festival setting is amazing,” he said. “My music is definitely a celebration of our natural world, so a place like Airlie feels especially aligned with songs like ‘Follow the Sun’. “These are the kinds of shows I love, and hopefully, weather permitting, we can actually pull down the tent and play under the stars!” Equally as famous for his unwavering commitment to social and environmental activism as he is for his extraordinary gifts as a musician, the significance of playing at a destination known as the ‘Heart of the Great Barrier Reef’ isn’t lost on Rudd. “I’ve been lucky to witness some of the good work that people are doing in the world of reef regeneration and that’s inspiring,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue down that path.” Also urging festivalgoers to ‘Live it Up’ in Airlie Beach is beloved Australian band Mental As Anything, whose performance will form part of a historic 50th anniversary tour, comprising a limited number of exclusive festival appearances and select metropolitan headline shows. Original member and iconic pop artist, Reg Mombassa, is promising fans a rare and unforgettable opportunity to experience the band’s timeless hits live once more, and celebrate their unique blend of songwriting, artistry, and performance flair. “We’re known for being a party band, so the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is a perfect fit,” he said. In total agreeance that there’s ‘No Aphrodisiac’ quite like it are The Whitlams, whose frontman Tim Freedman says the band is thrilled to be one of the festival’s headliners for 2026. “I’ve been wanting to return to the Whitsundays for decades and now we have the chance,” he said, adding: “it’s a great line-up, music lifts the soul, and we rock!” Other additions to the first line-up release include The Radiators, Adam Harvey, 19-Twenty, Skinny Living (UK), Little Quirks, The Mason Rack Band, The Wayward Suns, Loonaloop, Salt & Steel and the Airlie Beach Festival of Music’s 2025 Passport to Airlie competition winners Monroe. Tickets are on sale now at www.airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au costing $325 for a three-day pass, or $1100 for a VIP package, both including entry to the opening and after parties that bookend the main event. From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

From Bowen Beaches to Oscar Victory

On Monday 16th March, North Queensland–raised Judah Kelly attended the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where the short film he starred in, The Singers, was awarded an Oscar. The film tied for the win with another short film, in an Oscars occurrence that whilst rare, is indeed possible. This is a huge achievement that represents years of hard work, building craft and nurturing talent; Judah has no doubt made the community incredibly proud. Born in Townsville, Judah attended school in Bowen where he took part in various school choirs, an experience that inspired his musicianship and developed his performance capabilities. He continued his secondary education in Mackay before attending the Junior Academy of Country Music in Tamworth (NSW). Judah auditioned for the X Factor in 2012 and 2014. Despite not finding success, he was not deterred, deciding to audition for The Voice in 2017. After singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ in a blind audition he made it through the finals, where he became the official winner of the sixth season. His newest achievement is receiving the Oscar as one of the stars of short film The Singers, which received an award for Best Live Action Short at 98th Academy Awards. Directed by filmmaker Sam Davis, the film is an 18-minute musical comedy which centres around a spontaneous singing competition that breaks out amongst a group of random patrons in a dive bar. The film is based on the 1850 Ivan Turgenev story of the same name. Prior to the academy awards, the film had already won 35 awards across 50 film festivals in 2025. Judah’s inclusion in the film came out of a unique casting process. Rather than hiring actors through traditional means, filmmaker Sam Davis spent months scouring the internet for authentic voices he believed would bring the story to life. As a result, Judah was sought out for his raw vocal talent. “At first they emailed me to ask me to be in the film and I don’t act so I thought it was just a scam”, Judah said in an interview to Channel Nine’s Today Show prior to the ceremony. “They were very persistent with getting me to act. Then I found out everyone was a first-time actor and we all thought it was a scam. It turned out they did want us for a film – it’s about men and vulnerability”. Following the victory, Judah took to Instagram to express his joy. “We don’t even know how to act. Our film just won an Oscar!” The film tied with another short feature marking only the seventh time in Oscars’ history that a category closed with two winners. This is a fantastic achievement, and Judah should be incredibly proud of his efforts. He has certainly made communities across Bowen and Mackay immensely proud. The Fate of the “Llewelyn” … and its Proserpine Connection

August 24, 2023

For many years, the fate of the “Llewelyn”, which disappeared off Queensland waters in 1919, remained unsolved, until ……… on August 28, 1998, ‘The Daily Mercury’ reported that a Mackay diver, Mark Earney had solved the 79-year-old maritime mystery when he discovered the wreck near Bees Island.

It was almost intact and was resting in a vertical position.

The “Llewelyn” was an iron steamship of some 350 tons, 112ft long, 19ft 6inches wide, and 9ft 2ins deep. Built in Chester, England in 1884, it was engaged in pilot service in the port of Brisbane.

During this time, it narrowly escaped foundering in heavy seas at Cape Moreton and was declared by a well-known mariner to be unsuitable for use in heavy seas.

Consequently, the State Treasurer, Mr Barnes, took steps to safeguard the lives of seamen on this steamer by issuing instructions forbidding it to be put to sea in rough weather.

On July 16, 1919, the “Llewelyn” departed from Rockhampton enroute to Bowen, making a port of call at Cape Capricorn on July 17 and leaving there that same day.

Based on the report by Captain Wilson of the “Florant” of “a terrific sea … and wind of gale force” in the area which did not abate for “a couple of days”, it is believed that the ship struck a bad storm with strong south-easterly gales.

It appears the warnings of the ship’s unsuitability in rough seas was well-founded.

Early searches by Captain Wilson and others between Mackay and Bowen located very little wreckage despite their search lasting a week during which time they walked around the coastline of every island, each wearing through two boots in the process.

A hatch cover of the old type used on vessels such as the “Llewelyn” was found and Captain Wilson, who had served on the “Llewelyn” some years previously, was of the opinion that the wreckage was part of the ill-fated steamer.

Mr Busuttin from St Bees Island, an 18-year-old at the time, reported seeing lots of wreckage passing north around July 25, 1919, and recalled, many years later, that he had picked wreckage off the beach at St Bees as well as a bell bearing the name “Llewelyn”.

Considering the weight of the bell and its inability to be able to float, he believed that the wreck would have had to be very close to shore.

Mr Busuttin also stated that the bell “was cursed with the number 13” - a number dreaded by sailors of earlier times who believed it would be certain cause of death and disaster.

Some reports say that there were thirteen aboard including two passengers - a commercial traveller, Will Bradford and Rowena Gordon who was a probationer nurse at Rockhampton Base Hospital travelling to visit friends in Proserpine then on to Bowen.

Rowena Gordon was born Rowena Sheen Ryan in 1900 but was brought up by her aunt Emily Gordon.

Her mother, Rebecca Sheen, had been in a relationship with William Harold Ryan who was a police constable in Proserpine and who went on the be the 6th Police Commissioner for Queensland.

Rebecca registered Rowena’s surname as “Sheen Ryan” making no doubt as to who the father was.

Sadly, Emily Gordon, nee Sheen, went on to commit suicide in 1944.

Rowena was well thought of as a very compassionate nurse with a bright future.

A nightie was found washed up on St Bees with the name “Gordon” stitched on it and also some dark hair in a life ring.

It was reported that she had been tied to the life ring, no doubt in the hope that her life would be saved.

Expect The Unexpected With Wil Anderson Live

August 24, 2023

Coming off the back of wrapping up his newest project, Australian comedic icon Wil Anderson will be performing live at the Airlie Beach Hotel for one night only!

This show is set to be a roundhouse of laughter and gags, with Wil on the lookout for the best audience interactions that he’s ever faced.

In a unique first for Wil, the Airlie Beach show is set to include the best of his hilarious comedy.

“This show will actually be a bit of a combination of both scripted and improvisation, and there’ll probably be a little bit more talking to the audience,” Wil said.

“It’s quite exciting!

“We’ll just have some fun, everyone just wants to laugh, and talk about some interesting things,” said Wil.

“I try to be very conscious about not bringing old materials to new shows, and if you want to watch an entire show of mine, you can go onto ABC iView and watch it for free, but this is not that,” he said.

“This is a group of people getting out together, having an experience together, which is completely flavoured by the audience.”

With no expectations of how the show will go, Wil is excited to get a taste of Airlie Beach.

“And certainly, my intention will be to make sure it’s a really fun night for people, however that plays out,” Wil said.

“I’m happy with a few characters to be involved in the show, they’re always a bit of fun.”

Wil says he loves meeting different sorts of people and is always up for a bit of banter with the audience, especially the lively characters.

“At one of my most recent shows, I had this guy in the front row who was very proudly a plumber, and I was like ‘I cannot believe you made it to the show on time!’.”

But not to worry, Wil won’t call on you unless you look keen and eager.

“I’m not there to pick on you, I’m actually there to find out something interesting about you then refine it and have some fun with it,” he explains.

“It’s never about ‘you’re wearing a dumb shirt’ unless someone is a dickhead first and then I’m very happy to use my comedic skills to maintain a bit of authority over the room.”

“Don’t get me wrong, if they start it, I’m happy to finish it.”

“That’s the thing with comedy, it’s a conversation with the audience, it’s as much about listening as it is about talking.

“All these things are about having a conversation with the audience, and I always say, it’s a collaboration.

“We’re about to make comedy together, and the good news is, I do all the hard work, you don’t need to try to be funny, you just have to answer my questions and I’ll do the job and make it funny!”

For one night only, only at the Airlie Beach Hotel, Wil Anderson Live. Get your tickets while you can!

Sound Of Freedom

August 24, 2023

Sound of Freedom follows Tim Ballard, a former Homeland Security Investigations operative, as he endeavours to rescue a young girl, Ricio, as she becomes embroiled with human traffickers.

Working as a Homeland Security Officer, Tim is becoming frustrated with arresting people in possession of child pornography, but not being able to rescue a single child from this situation.

After arresting a predator, Tim pretends to be a paedophile himself, in order to be able to meet with a trafficked child.

This is where he meets Miguel, a trafficked boy who is still missing his sister Ricio.

It comes to light that a nice-faced woman posed as a modelling agent and was able to separate the children from their parents.

Under the guise of a modelling contract, she was able to convince the children’s father of the legitimacy of her offer.

Vowing to find and return Ricio to her family, Tim embarks to Columbia, where he meets Vampiro, a former cartel accountant who now works to rescue children.

Setting up a team of other likeminded individuals, including a police officer, Tim is able to organise a sting operation and rescue a number of children from the modelling guise, however Ricio is not among them.

Rather, Ricio was sold to the Revolutionary Armed forces of Columbia, deep in the heart of the jungle.

Posing as doctors, the group infiltrate the army, however Tim enters the centre camp alone.

He discovers that Ricio is in the clutches of the rebel leader, known as The Scorpion, before he is able to free Ricio, and they escape into the jungle.

Tim returns Ricio to Miguel and their father, and the family go back to Honduras, with Tim returning back to the United States.

The film ends with Tim testifying before the United States Congress, which results in the American government being able to cooperate with foreign countries on trafficking investigations.

Telling the story of love, loss, and indescribable pain, Sound Of Freedom is touching and intimate.

Sound of Freedom will be released to the Bowen Cinema Friday August 25.

Radiant Revelry Where Art, Magic And Light Unite

August 24, 2023

Daly Bay Illuminate glows anew with a rescheduled date, following a weather-induced postponement during the last week of July.

The dedicated Mackay Festival of Arts team worked tirelessly to bring back the mesmerising displays to Queens Park from October 5 to 8.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the MECC and Festivals teams had done a tremendous job bringing the event back together.

“Daly Bay Illuminate features sprawling works by community artists and three big third-party displays that all needed to be available to come to our region at the same time – plus we needed a time when we could have the MECC available, so we could have a wet-weather backup,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Hats off to the team – this is going to be a fantastic event combining local, community-created artworks, the lighting magic of our MECC technicians and large-scale travelling installations,” he said.

Entry to this all-ages, illuminated wonderland will still be free.

The event will run from 6pm to 9pm each night and will feature the Lost Dogs’ Disco by ENESS as its major drawcard.

“This is an immersive installation of 16 dogs, some up to five-and-a-half metres tall,” Mayor Williamson said.

“There are four distinct characters, inspired by three dog breeds – poodles, bull terriers and dachshunds – that are curled-up, standing and even touching noses,’’ he said.

“As visitors journey through the colourful pack, the dogs’ coats light up and they greet passers-by with happy grunts to celebrate each new person’s arrival.”

Shaking Up Mackay With Shakespeare's Twelfth Night

August 24, 2023

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, Sydney based theatre company Bell Shakespeare, will be visiting Mackay with a fresh retelling of the romantic comedy which captured the attention of audiences in 1623.

Those familiar with Shakespeare’s works recognise Twelfth Night as the playwright’s most musical play. It tells the story of Viola, who finds herself washed up in a strange new land and, determined to survive, disguises herself as a man to secure a position in the household of Duke Orsino.

MECC Manager, Andrew Bobeldyk, encourages audiences who are new to Shakespeare to come along and try something different.

“Bell Shakespeare has an uncanny ability to get an audience laughing at comedy and wit that was written centuries ago,” he said.

“First timers are always surprised at how much they enjoy their renditions of Shakespeare’s plays.”

Directed by Heather Fairbairn, who has worked internationally with companies including the Royal Opera House and the Royal Court Theatre in London, the production will feature original music from Aria Award winner Sarah Blasko, bringing a unique vision to Shakespeare’s most musical play.

Ms Fairbairn said, “I’m fascinated by the enigmatic nature of Twelfth Night, which transcends time and place.

“In this production, there is no specified setting which, coupled with the haunting nature of Sarah Blasko’s music, lends an otherworldly feel to the play.”

The Sydney based theatre company is also bringing student scholarship and workshop opportunities to the region with their Regional Arts Access (RAW) and John Bell Scholarship (JBS) programs.

For more information on the performance, RAW or JBS please contact themecc.com.au.

‘Breastival’ Celebration At Proserpine Hospital Maternity Unit

August 24, 2023

Proserpine Hospital has celebrated World Breastfeeding Week in style, with their own ‘Breastival’ to celebrate all things breastfeeding.

With a team of 19 midwifes, the Proserpine Hospital delivers about 265 babies a year, with 97 per cent of mothers deciding to breastfeed their baby.

“We are pro breastfeeding, that’s what we promote, but we support all women with what they choose to do,” explains Donna Martin, the Midwifery Unit Manager.

Ms Martin and her team take their mothers on the full birth and care journey, making sure all mothers are well-informed of their options, and support all decisions.

“Breastfeeding is going to provide the baby with antibodies for a lot of different infections.

“Breastfed babies also get less gastro type infections, ear infections, there is reduced incidences of childhood diabetes, childhood cancers, childhood obesity. It’s obviously free, it’s there, it’s perfect for baby.

“For mum, there’s reduced incidences of certain types of cancers, less incidences of osteoporosis, and they get back to their pre-pregnant weight quicker.”

Proserpine Hospital is Baby Friendly Health Initiative accredited and have been holding the accreditation for 18 years now.

“We were the first rural hospital on the east coast of Australia to implement skin to skin in theatre, and the first rural hospital to achieve Baby Friendly Health accreditation in Queensland,” Ms Martin said.

Over the last few years, the Proserpine Hospital has introduced antenatal breastfeeding class, which was delivered over Zoom over COVID.

On the staff is Lactation Consultants, who support women on their feeding journey.

“We just supporting mums to feed their babies, however they wish to feed.”

The midwifery unit also encourages women to begin expressing their breasts around week 37 of their pregnancy.

“They usually have some milk in their breasts by that stage, so we get them to express and freeze that milk, so they have extra for when baby is hungry, or if the baby needs additional milk.”

The Breastival was hosted by the Maternity Unit and welcomed 50 attendees, including mums with their bubs.

With a raffle, with prizes donated from the community, and fun games, the event raised $1500, which will go towards items on the unit’s wish list.

With the success of this inaugural Breastival, the Maternity Unit is looking to make it an annual celebration.

‘No One To Depend On’ Except Dino Jag And The Mighty One

Performing Santana And The Doobie Brothers

Sitting Down with Dino Jag:

So, what makes this tribute performance so special?

It just seemed like a really good fit to take the opportunity to present both bands in one show.

These songs were written at a time when music was approached differently, nowadays there is so much pressure on the three-minute song.

The way that these songs were written, it was more about the foreplay and listening to the music was more of an experience.

We’re celebrating the big things with our show, a moment in musical history that is an absolute joy.

You’re an artist in your own right, how does it feel to perform the discography from legends of the 80s?

I've released a lot of tracks and been a part of a lot of recording projects.

I really respect and admire great songs, and for me, it's a joy to be able to do something like this.

It's a completely different dynamic, than touring with my own music, and it's great in many ways; it's a lot easier when you can celebrate someone else's legacy.

They’ve done all the hard work and they have these amazing songs.

Everybody sings along because they know all the words.

It's a great buzz for us to hit the stage together and deliver this kind of stuff to an eager crowd.

What’s your favourite song from Santana and The Doobie Brothers?

There are different things I love about each artist at different times, it’s a bit like going to a restaurant and having a 10-course meal!

The thing is with Santana, they have those Latino rhythms that kind of melt into pop.

I mean, Santana reinvented himself, when he started doing collaborations with other artists.

He was kind of pretty unique and how he went from becoming the Woodstock kind of era guy, to all of a sudden, 20 years ago, he ended up having the biggest hit.

So, it’s hard to name just one song that I love, that’s why this project is so special.
