Local Runners Conquer Mt Pleasant Hills Ahead Of King And Queen Of The Mountain

Runners get ready for the start of Jo’s 61 steps in very cool but sunny conditions. Photo supplied ‍Local runners took on the Mackay Road Runners Jo's 61 Steps event on Sunday morning, tackling challenging 5km and 10km courses through the steep streets of Mt Pleasant. ‍Despite the event's name, organisers joked it had since been confirmed there were actually 70 steps, with good-natured blame placed on the absent club president for the earlier miscount. ‍The course wound through Annie Wood Avenue, Pollock and High streets, and Norris Road, starting from Gordon White Library. ‍Fresh from the Gold Coast Marathon, Alana Knezevic was the first runner across the finish line after opting for the 5km course as she prepares for the Sydney Marathon in five weeks' time. Congratulations were also extended to local athletes who competed in the Airlie Running Festival, where ideal conditions greeted runners in the Whitsundays. ‍Sunday 26th July Make this your must-do event next weekend, with all participants welcome—there's no need to be a member of the Mackay Road Runners or Mackay Cycling Club. ‍Events include the M-Test Open King & Queen of the Mountain (6.4km), the Podiatry Mackay/Laura Pettifer Inspirational Under 18 Junior King & Queen of the Mountain (3km), and the Torque Tyres & Trailers Cycle Race(6.4km). All events begin at 7am, following a one-minute silence in memory of talented triathlete Laura Pettifer, who tragically passed away in 2008 following a downhill cycling training ride. ‍The course starts at Netherdale and finishes at the Eungella Chalet. Runners must register online by 6pm on Saturday 25th July, while cyclists should refer to the registration link for contact details. ‍Organisers look forward to welcoming participants to the challenging but rewarding annual event, with post-race celebrations at the Eungella Chalet, where breakfast will be available for purchase. A special thank you was also extended to Tess and the team for their hospitality. ‍Contributed by Janelle Tilse ‍

Play On Vouchers To Help Mackay Children Saddle Up For Sport

Play On Vouchers To Help Mackay Children Saddle Up For Sport

Member for Mackay Nigel Dalton visited Mackay Pony Club on Monday 20th July, to highlight the upcoming second round of the Queensland Government’s Play On vouchers, which provide financial support to help children aged five to 17 participate in sport and recreational activities. The $200 vouchers can help families cover costs such as registration and membership fees, uniforms, equipment and personal sporting gear. According to Mr Dalton, more than 9,300 children across the Mackay and Whitsunday region have already benefited from the program, with the next round opening on Monday, 27th July. The initiative aims to make sport more accessible for families facing rising costs, while encouraging children to step away from screens, get active, socialise and build friendships. “It’s a really great opportunity,” Mr Dalton said, encouraging parents to get involved in the next round as soon as possible. He said the program could help children access a wide range of activities, from pony club and golf to cadets and football. “We want to be able to give every child as much support as possible – especially in sport - because we know how beneficial it can be,” he said. Play On! Sports Vouchers have also made an impact across Queensland, with more than 293,800 children supported through the program in its first year. More than 3,750 sporting clubs across the state now accept the vouchers, with almost 2,500 also offering disability programs. Soccer, rugby league and netball were the most popular sports among participating children, while 13,917 vouchers were provided to children and young people with a disability, representing a 33 per cent increase compared with the previous voucher program. Girls also accounted for 129,050 vouchers, which has seen an increase of 30 per cent. For Mackay Pony Club Chief Instructor Tracey Camilleri, the vouchers can make a significant difference, particularly for families with more than one child involved in sport. “Sometimes it can be the difference between kids participating or not,” she said. Ms Camilleri said equestrian sport provides children with lessons in responsibility, as caring for a horse requires daily commitment and care. “There’s a deeper level of responsibility when kids are looking after an animal, and from what we’ve seen – that connection to the horse – can be really great for them,” she said. She said the benefits extended beyond competition, with children able to enjoy the outdoors, develop partnerships with their horses and find an outlet from the pressures of school and everyday life. Ms Camilleri, who has been passionate about horse-riding since she was a young girl, said: “Just being out in the fresh air, and dealing with an animal and getting a great response to learning how to build a partnership is something quite special.” The vouchers can also help young riders progress further, allowing families to put funding towards coaching, equipment and competition opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach. “Without these vouchers, some parents are sort of limited to how much they can do for their child in a sport, especially amongst the cost-of-living pressures,” Ms Camilleri said. For families interested in taking advantage of the next round, Play On vouchers offer an opportunity to help children get involved, stay active and discover a sport they can enjoy and grow with. Play On! Sports Vouchers are helping Mackay and Whitsunday children overcome cost barriers, get active and discover the benefits of sport, with the next round opening July 27th. Mackay Bushwalkers Climb To Castle Rock

Mackay Bushwalkers Climb To Castle Rock

Last Sunday saw six bushwalkers driving about 80 km north of Mackay to access the Cathu State Forest, and then to climb to the prominent feature known as Castle Rock. The leader of the group was Ken Fihelly, who spends half of each year participating in the Mackay Bushwalkers’ Club activities before escaping south to avoid the summer heat. The walk started steadily, but soon large rocks and thick vegetation on a moderately steep slope made progress difficult. Once the ridge was reached the climb became less steep and the vegetation changed to open forest. Attractive cycads were plentiful, and the morning tea spot afforded great views looking westwards towards the top of the range. On this walk, lunch is usually enjoyed on an impressive sloping slab close to the big ‘thumb’, and this tradition was continued, with great views across the valley being presented. The descent chosen offered some steep rocky terrain, but was easier than the alternative, and after emerging from the bush the hikers had a short easy walk back to the cars. Phone 0429 363 929 for information about how to join the organisation, and upcoming walks which include Sydney Heads, Red Cliff Island and St Helen’s Creek. Contributed with thanks by Carole Weekes

Swim Carnival Success!

August 24, 2023

Families who attend Airlie Swim School by Danielle went along to the third annual Swim Carnival last Sunday with over 60 children between the ages of four and 10 competing in a range of categories.

Held at Cannonvale Swim School, students demonstrated their skills in a range of styles including free-style, backstroke and breaststroke, swimming within their age-range and ability level to test their mettle against their peers.

For many this was the first opportunity to compete, and for others, this was a chance to return and exhibit what they had learnt all year.

“It was great to showcase what the kids have learnt over the last 12 months,” said swim school owner Danielle Shea.

“It was nice for them and their parents to see their progression and what they’ve been learning.”

Danielle said that competing in swimming races is an excellent way to build confidence and get experience swimming in a bigger pool.

First, second and third places received trophies, as well as the Most Improved, Encouragement and of course Swimmer of the Meet.

Proserpine Pitbulls Cricket Report

August 24, 2023

First up was the Under 11 Proserpine Pitbulls vs South’s Sharks: It was set to be a tough match against the unbeaten South’s Sharks team on a balmy Saturday morning.

Captain Zahra lost the toss and the Sharks opted to field first, knowing the day was only going to get hotter. The Proserpine side posted a 9/62 total at the end of 20 overs.

With the temperature rising, it was time for the Pitbulls to take the field.

It was a valiant effort by the Pitbulls, but the Sharks showed why they are on top of the table, putting on 7/144.

Player of the day went to Matthew.

Next was the Under 12s against Walkerston: After a tough round one encounter against the club, the young Pitbulls arrived at the ground knowing they were in for a battle.

Walkerston elected to bowl, and the local Pitbulls soon had a competitive 6-110 after their allotted 25-overs.

Under immense pressure, the Pitbulls restricted the Scrubby batters in the final over to see them finish at 6-106 after their 25 and claim the win.

Another great performance by this exceptional group of young legends.

Players Player: Aiden Farley (2-5, 2 runs, 1 catch)

Under 13s take on the Magpies Black in Mackay: With rain threatening, the Pitbulls lost the toss and were sent into bat. The Magpies opening bowlers started very well, maintaining a good line and length. Despite fierce opposition, the Pitbulls score posted at 6-137 after 25 overs.

The Magpies innings had a shaky start, and it continued to be shaky - ending with the U13s continuing their unbeaten run this season with their toughest match so far, winning by 49 runs.

All Conquering Mercy College Clinch Mackay Schools Rugby Cup Double

August 24, 2023

Mercy College rugby students etched their names in the record books last week after bringing home a Mackay Schools Rugby Cup championship double.

Competing for the final occasion in Mercy colours before the school’s amalgamation with St Patrick’s College in 2023, the Year 7/8 Boys and Year 9/10 Boys registered emphatic Grand Final triumphs at the Quarry Hills Rugby Grounds in North Mackay.

Mercy’s all conquering Year 7/8 Boys team capped an outstanding series by thumping Bowen State High 24-0 in the Cup Grand Final to remain undefeated.

Talented second rower Rory Lanigan produced a powerhouse display to earn the official Player of the Match award with strong performances from hooker Marik Srsen, back rower Cooper Elliott, half back Miles Kerrisk and forward Jesse Neale.

The Mercy outfit had too much power, skill and experience for their rivals in 2022 and didn’t concede a point for the entire competition – an incredible feat.

Squad comprised of Jesse Neale (captain), Marik Srsen, Rory Lanigan, Miles Kerrisk, Dominic Sorbello, Cooper Elliott, Eli Cookson, Treyce Ciantar, Lucas Aslette, Mason Mayer, Emmanuel Andrews, Sanguiani Chinula, Archie Townsend, Cooper Anderson, Raawi Tebao and Lucas Boshoff.

There was more joy for the Mercy Year 9/10 team as they toppled Holy Spirit College 22-7 to lift the senior premiership trophy.

Promising utility Toby Woodall turned in a superb performance with his strong running and no-nonsense defence a feature of the stirring triumph.

He was ably supported by talented flanker and stand-in skipper Declan Grady, clever half back Flynn Battaia and powerful colt Reuben Saron in a courageous team effort.

It was a huge turn around by the Mercy boys who lost their final preliminary round clash to Holy Spirit the previous week to finish second in their Pool.

Mercy eclipsed Mackay North State High 19-7 in a semi-final then backed up to avenge their loss to Holy Spirit with a convincing display in the trophy decider.

Trailing 7-0, the Mercy warriors hit their straps and overpowered their rivals with 22 unanswered points.

Mercy College Rugby co-ordinator Jo Ciantar-Schatkowski said the players were just starting to realise the significance of their premiership victories.

“They are the last athletes to win a sporting title under the Mercy College banner and will go down in the school’s history books,” revealed Jo.

“It was a fine achievement by both squads and a reward for all the hard work put in on the training paddock and during matches over the past month” she said.

Jo was supported by Mercy staff members Ashley Fergus, Nina Gaviglio and Bevan Little.

Convened by legendary forward and Holy Spirit College staff member Kyle Danns with the support of Mackay & District Junior Rugby Union, the four week competition is in its third year of operation featuring all Mackay schools as well as Bowen State High and Calen District State College.

Age divisions for Boys are Year 7/8 plus Year 9/10 which has two divisions of 15 a side rugby with Girls Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 playing a Rugby Sevens format.

Guardians Of The Beach Host Successful North Australian Titles

August 24, 2023

Mackay Surf Life Saving Club’s (SLSC) ‘Guardians of the beach since 1950’ hosted the 32nd annual North Australian Titles from October 28 to 30, bringing huge success to the club and the lifesaving movement in general.

A contingent of over 530 competitors and over 150 officials and water safety personnel as well as a dedicated workforce descended on Mackay’s beautiful Harbour Beach over the weekend.

With light northerly winds and crystal-clear waters, the event was conducted in sensational conditions, something lifesavers really appreciate about the beautiful Mackay region.

“The club is very proud of our small but strong competition group, from the nippers in U11’s to our masters,” Mackay SLSC Director of Surf Sports Josh Grant said.

“To see our competitors take on the best of the best in the North and achieve some great results is a credit to the culture and commitment we have at our club.

“The feedback I have received from visiting clubs is that they love coming here and competing at one of the best beaches in Queensland.

“I would just like to thank all the clubs that made the effort and travelled to Mackay to the North Aussies, we hope to see you next year!”

Mackay SLSC welcomed clubs from as far north as Cairns and south as Noosa for the event and Club President Brendan Smith said the interest and participation has been very impressive.

“We are continuing to grow this event and I just want to thank all competitors, officials, patrolling members and volunteers for making this happen,” he said.

“We are now planning to make next year’s event bigger and better and would encourage the Mackay community to get involved in this iconic lifesaving event.”

Stand out achievements went to the club’s nippers including U11 Ash Johnson: 2nd Beach Flags and 3rd beach Sprint; U12 Jo Madden: 2nd Board race; and U14 Molly Madden: 2nd 2km Beach Run.

The Masters crew finished the carnival on 6th position with some great results from Steve Bird: 1st Surf Ski & Surf race; Chris Webb: 1st 1km Beach run and 2nd surf race; Ben Madden: 3rd Ironman; Matty Newland: 3rd Ski; and Luke Griffith: 3rd 2km beach run, surf race and board race.

The masters crew excelled in ski team events taking 1st in double ski and 3rd in the ski relay with the Box Bellies Surf Boat Crew 2nd in the open division.

“It’s a fantastic result to place with the best of the best of Northern Australia,” said Mr Grant.

Mackay SLSC has a busy summer ahead, with the Tri-Series between Mackay, Eimeo and Sarina taking place tomorrow, November 26 and the Branch Titles on December 10 to 11.

Frisbee Fever

For Chris Palazzi, throwing a frisbee is a euphoric experience.

“I like watching plastic fly, I don’t know what it is,” he said.

“Something about the physics, I guess it’s tranquil watching it fly.”

Chris has been playing disc sports for years, even representing Queensland and South Australia in ultimate frisbee.

As he got older and more courses were constructed around Australia, Chris focused his skills on disc golf, travelling to the Sunshine Coast last weekend to compete in the Australian Disc Golf Championships.

The Australian Disc Golf Championships brought together some of the best in the world in a competitive yet social atmosphere.

“There was a lot of intensity … but at the same time, especially towards the end when we were following around the pro players, there was a really good atmosphere, and it was really cool to see some of the best in the world competing,” he said.

Chris placed 11th out of 30 in his division, reaching as high as fifth throughout the weekend.

“I know there’s some things in my game that I need to work on and there’s some things in my game that are quite good compared to the pros,” he said.

Disc sports have been rising in popularity over the last few years, and the weekend gave Chris an appreciation of the level of skill out there.

“With things like Covid which meant you couldn’t do team sports any more, people were looking for outdoor activities in small groups where you could stay isolated, and disc golf just ticked all the boxes so it’s basically exploded over the last three years,” he said.

“There’s more and more courses being put in … Mackay’s hopefully one of the next spots to get one.”

Chris and his wife Keri run Kingfisher Disc Golf, a local supplier for everything disc sports and the sponsor for Mackay Disc Sports aiming to bring disc sports to Mackay.

“We’re trying to get both ultimate and disc golf going,” he said.

“They’re targeted at similar crowds but at the same time ultimately different; ultimate’s a bit more athletic and disc golf is basically accessible to just about anyone.”

Mackay Disc Sports is holding their second league day this Sunday, November 27 from 2:30pm at John Breen Park in North Mackay.
