Bowen Lions 60th Birthday celebration.
For six decades, the Bowen Lions Club has left its mark across the community, from helping bring vital medical services to town and supporting local schools to building community spaces and even rushing life-saving blood hundreds of kilometres.
The 60th birthday celebration for the club brought together 64 people, including current and former members, representatives from neighbouring Lions clubs, members of council and the Bowen community, with decades of the club’s history displayed through photographs and memorabilia.
Among those celebrating was long-serving member Ben De Luca, who joined Lions Lady Irene Allen in cutting the anniversary cake, while Michael Brunker took on Master of Ceremony duties for the afternoon.
For the Lions Ladies who organised the celebration, seeing so many people come together made the occasion particularly special.
Over the 60-years, the Bowen Lions have contributed to many good causes in the region, such as providing vehicles for the Blue Nurses and ambulance service, conducted emergency blood runs to Townsville, helped develop Lions Park and financed and organised the construction of the Bowen Columbarium.
Among its proudest achievements was supporting the establishment of the oncology unit at Bowen Hospital, saving local patients from travelling to Townsville for treatment. As well as organising, financing and providing manpower for the installation of the landing lights at the Bowen Aerodrome.
The Lions Ladies have also supported projects alongside the wider club, including helping raise funds towards the oncology unit at Bowen Hospital, while regularly contributing to organisations including Bowen Historical Society and Museum, Bowen Meals on Wheels, wildlife rescue and CQ Rescue.
Among their longest-running initiatives is the annual Baby Welcoming Ceremony, which has been held for more than two decades and now sees some of the babies welcomed in its earliest years returning with children of their own.
The occasion also coincided with the club’s 2026 changeover, with outgoing president Peter Goodman handing the reins to incoming president Bob Crowther for the year ahead.
“Incoming president Bob Crowther will hit the ground running,” Peter said.
The Lions ladies’ support for the club is now taking another step, with four Lions Ladies becoming official Lions members to help strengthen membership numbers and secure its future.
“This sort of loyalty is amazing, therefore we encourage people who still hold these sort of community values, to have a think about the Lions club and join us to keep the kindred spirit going strong.”
