A meal delivery will soon come with a reminder to keep drinking for Proserpine Meals on Wheels clients, with Whitsunday Lions funding reusable bottles to help them stay hydrated as the weather warms.

‍

The idea followed when a delivery driver found a client unwell at home, where an ambulance was called, and the client was taken to hospital, with dehydration being the final diagnosis.

Geraldine Carvell, who works for Meals on Wheels and volunteers with Lions, approached the club to fund water bottles for the service’s roughly 70 clients, helping them stay hydrated throughout the day.

‍

“It also gives deliverers an opportunity when they’re delivering the meal … they can just say, ‘Have you filled the drink bottle up?’” Geraldine said.

Marked with time stamp reminders to drink throughout the day, the bottles help give recipients a way to keep track of their water intake and a prompt to refill.

‍

Geraldine thanked Lions for helping turn the idea into something practical for local clients.

“Lions were more than happy,” she said.

‍

“They also thought it was a good idea, so they were more than happy to fund it.”

‍

The donation continues Lions’ support for the service, which has also included assistance with new freezers.
